Dear Newton Voters,
My name is Anping Shen, and I am running for the Newton School Committee Ward 3 seat. I am respectfully asking you to support my campaign and vote for me on November 7, 2017. I came to this country thirty years ago seeking a quality education. As a young college faculty member anxious for career advancement, I came to Boston University with a fellowship grant to complete my graduate education. To support myself during my graduate studies, I found a free room/board live-in position at a group home in Newton Center serving developmentally disabled adults. Thus, I came to know the Garden City and its well-known reputation for an excellent school system. My wife and three-year old son joined me a year later. My son was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) after entering his kindergarten class. He was described as "an exhausting student in class." To ensure a quality education for my son, I started to get more involved in his school and learning activities. The increasing engagement led me to play an active role in the Newton community, school activities and various community programs (learn more about my experience). Throughout the past three decades of raising my children in Newton, I have learned that there is a direct correlation between the quality of a child's education and the quality of the parents' involvement in his/her overall learning and growing. More importantly, as a concerned parent, I believe that the goal of a quality school education is to help nurture productive citizens with open minds and compassionate hearts. My son's successful career and enriched life is a strong testament to the high quality of his Newton's school education. Now my daughter is getting ready for her college education after receiving an excellent education in the Newton's school system. Along the way, as a professional educator, I have become a passionate activist, advocating for quality school education that should well serve the whole community. I have fostered a strong belief that a great community should first and foremost be able to provide a quality education to all its children. We are so grateful to have lived and raised our family in Newton. I sincerely hope to have your support to be elected to the Newton School Committee this November, and to be able to serve this wonderful community with my knowledge, skills and, most of all, passion for educational excellence!
RESPECTFULLY, Anping Shen |
